yoga-hiking

Q. Can hiking enhance my yoga practice and vice versa?

A. Hiking can improve a yogi’s cardiovascular health and bring greater lung capacity for deeper, fuller breaths. Yoga can improve a hiker’s ability to move (flexibility), focus, and gaze (drishti), as well as overall body awareness and alignment (foundation, core, and integration). They truly can go hand in hand.

Q. How are hiking and yoga similar? How do both practices connect us to nature?

A. Both the practice of hiking and of yoga connect and root us to the present moment and really feeling the earth beneath us. They both connect us to nature through the presence of all the elements: earth, water, air, and fire. In the world of hiking, we breathe in fresh air, walk on the earth’s soil, bask under the sun, and often come across streams, creeks, waterfalls, and lakes. In the world of yoga, we connect to our breath (air), fire up our muscles and our core (fire), bring foundation to all asanas (earth), and create space and expansion (air) in each pose. Yoga brings us into our natural state, connecting us with our true nature.
